Furry Nation‘s paperback’s edition was published in October. It’s been getting some very nice reviews within the furry community and the publisher’s publicity department has been doing a good job getting mainstream attention. As you may have read in previous posts, I’ve done several radio interviews, appeared in suit in the New York Post and even live via Skype on a Chicago TV news show.

But when I was interviewed and photographed by Huck, a British cutting-edge/pop culture magazine, I wasn’t expecting anything more than being part of an article about the furry community along with an assortment of other furs and a mention of my book. (I wasn’t particularly worried about how they’d treat Furry; they had a photo spread of female fursuiters in a prior issue that was very positive, not a single cheap shot in sight.)

This however blew my mind when I finally saw the issue: they put Komos on the issue’s cover!

That was just the beginning, however: to a completely unexpected degree, the article was about your truly, namely moi!

As you can see, in addition to shooting Komos in Carl Schurz park overlooking Manhattan’s East River (misidentified in the issue as nearby Ruppert Park), the photographer also captured puny human me in my unkempt apartment nearby, holding Komos’s head. (Please ignore my cat’s scratching post, the box fan and the bookend pointlessly cluttering the frame.) But that’s not all, folks: Huck decided to grace the magazine’s inside back cover with one last photograph of Komos, this time face-to-face with one of the park’s native denizens, an honest-to-God natural furry:

Back-back-radio interviews this week, first with Oregon’s Public Radio station KPOV (“High Desert Community Radio”) and the following day with Auburn California’s KAHI, where I was interviewed by the charming and upbeat Mary Jane Popp on her aptly titled Poppoff show:

Mary Jane Popp hosts The KAHI Noon News and Poppoff with Mary Jane Popp. Poppoff is a fast-paced Magazine Radio Show dedicated to keeping you on the cutting edge of today’s hot button issues. Poppoff says what it does and does what it says. It’s energetic, upbeat, entertaining, and motivational. From the inner to the outer self, Poppoff takes you to a new dimension in Radio.

(A much friendlier person than Alex Jones or Michael Savage, both of whose shows the station broadcasts.)

Both interviews/interviewers were mucho fun; If/when I figure out how to add audio files to this website I’ll post both on the site’s still-empty “Photos/Video” page.

More stuff going on in the wonderful world of Furry Nation:

November 2: the blue dragon Kothorix reviewed FN on his very popular YouTube page.  (19,000+ furs have already viewed the page; if just 5% of them buy FN I’ll be a very happy Komodo dragon indeed!)

November 3: Chicago’s WGN-TV morning news show interviewed me on camera via Skype in a segment titled “Man explains life as a Furry.”

(Well, somebody had to.) Just like everything else that was put on the internet, the interview is still out there floating around, and probably will be until doomsday.

November 7: Ahmar Wolf and I exchanged Emails which he compiled into a print interview on his webpage.

November 14: Furry Nation finds itself listed on the Japanese bookseller website “Rakuten.”

They’re offering the English-language version; as far as I know it’s yet to be translated into a foreign tongue (or spoken by a foreign mouth).

November 18: Huck, a British print publication that (according to their website) “celebrates independence: people and movements that paddle against the flow. Inspired by radical youth culture, Huck roams the globe seeking out artists, actists and creative renegades who are breaking down the old world to build something new” interviewed me by phone for a future issue, followed closely by a freelance photographer who arrived to photograph me inside and out of my Komos fursuit.

Forward into the future: I’ll be attending Chicago’s Midwest FurFest from November 30 through December 3. Not hosting any panels or doing any sessions on behalf of the book, just enjoying myself like any of the other 7,000+ furs on hand. If you see me (or Komos!) there, please do say hello!

Here’s the entire review.

And here’s a VERY nice quote:

It’s a damn good read, it’s engaging, and it covers aspects of the furry fandom that the youngin’s and new folk (much like…you know…lawyers who were shanghaied into badger heads) aren’t aware of. It presents a good overview, but it’s not really a deep-dive historical monograph…nor is it intended to be. It’s a passion project that hands out a high level overview of the history of the furry fandom, and it’s a well-written one that’s definitely worth the purchase price.

Thanks much, Mister B.B.!

Hey, things began with a bang on September 23rd when furcast.fm invited me onto their podcast to chatt about FN and all things furry for quite a stretch of time.

Then on October 15 The New York Post gave me and the Nation two-thirds of a page, with a large-scale version of Dragonscales’ sophisticated Komos portrait and beneath it a headshot of my real-life face.

Mixed opinions ensued, with most furs feeling the piece was a putdown of furs but a sizeable minority saying either it wasn’t that bad or wasn’t bad at all and allowed me to speak my piece.

I’m about 3/4 with the first group. The writer did quote me substantially, but the editorial dressing around the text left a lot to be desired. In print the article was headlined “Animal attraction” but its subhead was “Inside the weird world of ‘furries,’ where grown adults get their kicks dressing up as beasts.” “Weird…get their kicks;” yeah, thanks, right. The writer waited until the third sentence to throw the “F”-bomb (as in “fetish”) into the article: “…enjoy dressing up as cartoon animals, sometimes as a sexual fetish, but more often as a fun escape.” Well, at least they put it in context, but I wish they prioritized the other “F”word: “fun” instead of “fetish.”

That was the print version: the online version was headlined “Inside the weird world of the ‘furry’ fetish.’ In case you had any doubts where they were coming from, its key words were “costumes/fetishes/sex.” [Insert frustrated scream! here.] With more room to play with online, the article featured Komos’ portrait, the entire headshot showing me holding Komos’s head and a large-size photo of Furry Nation‘s cover. Well, they say any publicity is good publicity. (Judge for yourself, see which one you like best.)

More media coming up, including another podcast, a blog interview, and an actual broadcast appearance on a Chicago TV station’s morning news show! Details and links to come (when there are details to report on and items to link to…)
